Netflix developing new live-action ‘Pokémon’ series

Pokemon live-action series development Netflix

Netflix is reportedly developing a new live-action Pokémon series with Joe Henderson, known for his work as co-showrunner of Lucifer.

According to Variety, the unnamed project will be a live-action series in the vein of the 2019 film Detective Pikachu. Henderson is reportedly attached to write and executive produce the show. Sources have indicated the project is in its early stages with no plot or casting details revealed.

This will be the second upcoming project Henderson will develop for Netflix, with another – a series adaptation of his comic book Shadecraft – announced in March.

This marks the streaming giant’s latest project adapting a well-known anime property into new live-action works. Netflix’s upcoming take on Cowboy Bebop, starring John Cho, is due for release in fall 2021.

Meanwhile, the streamer’s adaptation of One Piece, announced in January 2020, has had few official updates since. Netflix released a live-action feature film based on Death Note in 2017.

In recent months, Netflix has ramped up on original anime series on the platform, among them the Filipino supernatural thriller Trese and the Flying Lotus-scored samurai tale, Yasuke. Next month, Netflix will also release an anime film spun off from its live-action adaptation of The Witcher franchise.

The original Pokémon anime was based on the wildly successful video game franchise by Nintendo. It remains one of the highest-grossing media franchises in the world. Since its debut in 1996, the property has spawned the anime series and an ongoing animated film franchise. Its latest entry, Pokémon the Movie: Secrets of the Jungle, was released in December 2020.
