Singer-songwriter Ava Maybee has shared a cover of ‘Universally Speaking’ by the Red Hot Chili Peppers – whose drummer, Chad Smith, is her father.
The cover – shared via Maybee’s Instagram page late last week (July 24) – sees the singer performing the song’s post-chorus as a solo piano rendition, accompanied by a choir of pre-recorded backing vocals.

‘Universally Speaking’ was released as the fifth and final single from the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ eighth studio album ‘By the Way’. It peaked in the top 40 of the UK single charts, and was also featured on the band’s 2003 ‘Greatest Hits’ compilation.
Maybee – whose full name is Ava Maybee Cardoso Smith – released her debut single ‘Lay Low’ in December 2020. This was followed by two new singles in 2021: ‘See Me Now’ in March, and ‘Colors’ in June. Prior to pursuing music, Maybee also worked as an actor on the Brat TV web-series Stuck, playing the character of Lottie.
The Red Hot Chili Peppers are reportedly at work on their 12th studio album, which also serves as their first since 2006’s ‘Stadium Arcadium’ to feature guitarist John Frusciante. The band’s classic 90’s line-up reunited for a third time with Frusciante’s return in late 2019.
Recently, Frusciante and founding bassist Flea contributed a cover of Gang of Four’s ‘Not Great Men’ to the compilation album ‘The Problem of Leisure’, in tribute to the late Andy Gill from the band. Gill had produced the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ self-titled 1984 debut album.
